Volunteer Dog Walkers: Please read
We wish to let you know about some changes that we are making to the way we manage Volunteer Dog Walking activities at the Home. These changes are being made to ensure that we make the best use of the time and support you so generously give us while we adapt to the daily challenges that we face as a city centre rescue.
Many of you may already be aware that we have seen a decrease in recent months of dogs coming in to us that are suitable to be walked by our volunteers. Unfortunately, on some days this has meant wasted journeys for volunteers when no dogs have been available to be walked. We have also seen an increase in the number of dogs coming in to us with behavioural issues. These dogs require extra help and attention from staff, and have training programmes provided for them by our Behavioural Team. The progress of these dogs’ behaviour can rapidly deteriorate if they do not receive this special training every day. This puts added pressure on our staff team to provide the extra time each dog needs.
In order to avoid the disappointment of wasted journeys by ensuring we have dogs available to be walked, and to give our Animal Care and Behaviour Teams the time they need to work with those dogs that require more intensive and consistent training programmes, we are introducing a dog walking booking system from Monday 13th February.
We hope that you will find the following process simple and easy to use. From Monday 13th February 2017, to ensure that we will have a dog available for you to walk, we kindly ask that you:
Please note that:
· Only one dog will be able to be walked on your visit (unless there are un-booked dogs available on the day).
· For the moment, slots can only be booked for the following day, we will not be able to book slots further in advance.
· As usual, we will pair you up with the dog, this ensures that every dog who is suitable to be walked by a volunteer, gets out and about for walkies.
We would like to thank you for your patience over the last few months, especially if you have turned up to walk dogs, only to find no suitable ones have been available. We appreciate just how frustrating this has been and very much hope that the new booking system will work better for you our dedicated volunteers, for our Animal and Behavioural Teams, and for the animals in our care.
We welcome your feedback and are happy to answer any questions that you may have. Please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us on 0117 9776043 from Tuesday – Sunday between 10am and 12pm and 2pm and 4pm.
Thank you in advance for helping us to make the transition to this new system as easy as possible, we very much appreciate your ongoing support.
Best wishes – The Bristol Dogs and Cats Home Team
