30/05/2017 - Rex reaches his 130th mile!

Text

A recently rehomed resident from Bristol Dogs and Cats Home has reached his target of walking 130 miles alongside his dedicated volunteer walker, Robin.

Rex is a young Mastiff Cross, who is estimated to be between 1 and 3 years old – he arrived at Bristol Dogs and Cats Home as a stray.

Robin set himself and Rex the challenge of walking 130 miles around Bristol to celebrate the 130th anniversary of Bristol Dogs and Cats Home. That’s the same as walking from Bristol to Luton!

Rex and Robin visited many of Bristol’s most famous sights on their treks including Cabot Tower, Cabot Bridge, Arnos Vale Cemetery, Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol Harbourside, St Mary Redcliffe, Millennium Square, the Christmas Steps, Bristol Zoo and he even had a trip on the train!

Members of the public have sponsored Rex and Robin throughout their trek, including friends that they made on their journey. The money raised from the trek will go towards the Anniversary Appeal - which will fund a roof for the outdoor play area - meaning that dogs like Rex, and his pals, can use the space all year round.

Robin is one of the Home’s long-running volunteers and alongside his trusty pal Rex has raised an amazing £615. To celebrate the end of Rex Treks, Rex was rewarded with a doggie cake at RSPCA Bristol’s recent Open Doors & Dog Home Tours Event.
Robin said: "In his time at Bristol Dogs and Cats Home, Rex has developed into a truly lovely dog. I can't think of a more fitting companion with whom to share 130 miles. That progress is partly down to Rex himself, but is mostly a tribute to the fantastic work that's done by the animal care staff. They're amazing.”

Jodie, the animal home manager said: “Robin has been a volunteer dog walker for many years and we are so grateful for his help. Rex and Robin built up a great bond and have enjoyed many fun and adventurous treks together across our city of Bristol. Walking 130 miles is a fantastic achievement and Rex has enjoyed every second of it. Thank you Robin from everybody at Bristol Dogs and Cats Home.”

The Home was opened in 1887, 130 years ago, when Edward T Parker found a puppy walking through a snow storm with nowhere to go to escape the cold. The Home has been providing a second chance at life for hundreds of animals every year since then.

Rex was happily rehomed on Friday 26 May. His new owner, Mr Smith said: “My wife and I are dog lovers. We have had seven previous Mastiffs, Rex is our eighth! Rex is such a friendly boy and we are very excited to bring him home.”
