01/01/2017 - 130th Anniversary for Bristol Dogs and Cats Home!

2017 marks Bristol Dogs and Cats Home 130th Birthday!

This year it will be 130 years since we first opened our doors to Bristol's lost and starving dogs.

The story starts during a snowstorm in December 1886 when Edward T Parker discovered a stray puppy following him along the road.

Realising there was nowhere for this pup to go Edward T. took the initiative and, together with like-minded local businessmen, purchased a plot of land in Waterloo Street, St Philips, where in 1887 "The Bristol Home for Lost and Starving Dogs" first opened it's doors to animals in need!

With only six kennels it quickly became evident that a larger site was needed to accommodate the city’s strays and, in 1901 the home moved to its present location in Albert Road.

In 1954 it was decided with the Charity Commissioners that the Home, whilst remaining autonomous with separate funds, would be administered by the Trustees of the RSPCA Bristol & District Branch.

Over the years the Home has grown in size and many improvements have been made to house a variety of animals. What started as a shelter just for dogs, now accommodates cats, rabbits, ferrets, birds and other small animals. The site continues to adjust to suit our ever changing needs.

We will be announcing a series of celebrations that will take place throughout the year - from a chance to learn all about our past, to special 130th birthday fundraisers and events - visit our special #130for130 to find out how you can be one of our very own #130for130 fundraiser's in 2017.

Take a walk down memory lane with our #onthisday special memories, commemorating special events in our pawesome 130 years of rescuing and rehoming Bristol's animals in need. We will be updating these throughout the year - click here to see our memories so far this year.
